Name: Schlafly Pumpkin Ale
Brewer: The Saint Louis Brewery, St. Louis, Mo.
By the numbers: About 240 calories per 12 oz.; 8 percent alcohol by volume
Notes: The is probably the best pumpkin ale I’ve had this fall. It was so good that I savored it instead of taking notes. It had just about everything going for it as a fall seasonal. It was rich and creamy and spicy with nutmeg, clove and cinnamon. Shlafly’s Pumpkin Ale is made with pumpkin, but also adds butternut squash for a bit of extra sweetness. And at 8 percent ABV, it packs a punch to go with all that flavor. It poured a rich reddish-orange color on draft and immediately hits the nose with a pumpkin pie aroma. I wasn’t planning on following up the Schlafly APA with this one, but you take them where you find them.
Try it with: A new local favorite beer place: Flinger’s Pizza & Pub in downtown Bloomington. Flinger’s has a fantastic beer selection for a local pizza place and they rotate their craft on draft monthly. Add to that pretty decent selection a wider array of bottles (not to mention some pretty tasty pizza and other doughy creations) and you’ve got a winner.
