Text 23 Apr 2 notes Red Nectar

Name: Red Nectar

Brewer: Nectar Ales, Paso Robles, Calif.

By the numbers: About 165 calories per 12 oz.; 5.4 percent alcohol by volume

Notes: This is the first beer I’ve ever tried from Nectar Ales, but they’ve been brewing it since 1987. Well, you’ll be happy to know that after all that time they’ve gotten it right. I’m a big fan of amber ales and lagers for their robust malty taste. Red Nectar doesn’t disappoint. It pours a rich amber color and has a nice oaky aroma. The taste is malty with some caramel, but it finishes with a bit of hop bite, thanks to the West Coast Chinook, Mt. Hood and Cascade hops. Add this one to this list of fine beers brewed in California.

Try it with: A renewed enjoyment of the NBA playoffs. I was a huge fan of the Chicago Bulls from the start of the Michael Jordan era in the mid-80s and on through all six championships. I hung in there through the early 2000s, but with bad teams and kids to take up my time I finally stopped watching. But with a strong Bulls team entering this year’s playoffs, I’ve been enjoying the games again. The lock-down defense of Chicago and the will-to-win play of Derrick Rose are a familiar combination.
