Text 24 May 3 notes Blackened Hops

Name: Blackened Hops

Brewer: Samuel Adams (Boston Beer Co.), Boston, Mass. (Recipe by Rodney Kibzey)

By the numbers: About 210 calories per 12 oz.; 7 percent alcohol by volume

Notes: This is the second beer I’ve had from the 2010 Samuel Adams Longshot American Homebrew Contest mix pack (though I bought it as a single and not part of the six-pack). The first, Honey B’s Lavender Ale, was a fantastic change of pace. A light summer refresher with a sweet floral finish. This one is the opposite. It pours a deep black with a thick tan head. The aroma is a heady mix of caramel and pine. The taste is complex, with the huge hops of an India Pale Ale and a smooth mocha finish. The style is known as a Black IPA and it mixes the best flavors of the IPA and a porter.Rodney Kibzey is a two-time winner of the Longshot contest, having won in 2007 as well.

Try it with: A bright NBA playoff run turning dark. The Chicago Bulls just don’t seem to have enough offensive talent to match up against the Miami Heat. The Bulls really didn’t put either the Indiana Pacers or Atlanta Hawks away very easily, so I’m not sure why I expected things to go better against the Heat. I guess I just didn’t want Miami to be able to buy a championship.
