Name: Wheach
Brewer: O’Fallon Brewery, O’Fallon, Mo.
By the numbers: About 150 calories per 12 oz.; 5.1 percent alcohol by volume; 7 IBUs
Notes: In my continuing quest to not give up on the idea of finding a good fruit beer besides Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat, I give you Wheach from the O’Fallon Brewery. According to the brewer, Wheach is their regular wheat beer with a touch of peach, which gives you… Wheach. (I can’t decide if that’s original or lame). Anyway, Wheach generally succeeds where other fruit beers fail. It doesn’t allow the peach to overpower the beer taste completely. Oddly, it’s not as refreshing as I would think. O’Fallon is a family-owned microbrewery that’s been in business for about a decade. They’ve got a pretty decent lineup of beers, according to their website, and Wheach is their summer seasonal (continuing my recent string of summer beer). The beer pours a hazy golden color, similar to a Hefeweizen, and the smell of peach is immediate. It’s a pretty thin beer, in terms of feel, but it goes down smooth enough. In all, not my favorite seasonal, but an interesting change of pace.
Try it with: Successfully putting up a basketball hoop. After struggling to dig a two-foot deep hole through solid clay and pouring concrete only to have it rain, I finally finished putting up the in-ground, outdoor hoop in the driveway. It’s one of those things that’s harder than it looks. Anyway, now we can shoot hoops while drinking beer this summer. Hooray.
