Name: Weizenbock
Brewer: Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Chico, Calif.
By the numbers: About 200 calories per 12 oz.; 6.8 percent alcohol by volume
Notes: This beer comes from the Sierra Nevada “Best of Beer Camp” mix-pack released this summer. It’s one of four in the box, the others being a Juniper Black Ale, Double IPA and California Common. Beer Camp is a contest held by the California-based brewer which invites a limited number of fans into the brewery for a two-day brewing experience that ends in the production of a special beer. It’s like a Golden Ticket for beer fans. This year, you had to submit a video telling them why they should pick you. Alas, the contest is closed, but you can view the entries here. Anyway, I’ll be reviewing all four of these beers over the next few entries. The Weizenbock was an interesting mix of Hefeweizen and golden bock, fermented with SN’s Kellerweis yeast. It poured a cloudy gold and had a spicy, fruity aroma. The taste was just as spicy, with a hint of pear, banana and cloves.
Try it with: A recent run of high-alcohol beers. At 6.8 percent abv, this is the “lightest” beer I’ve reviewed in a while. None of the Beer Camp beers is lower than 6.5 percent. Not exactly lawn-mowing beers, but then the lack of rain and higher temperatures recently has left us with very little lawn to mow anyway.
